Memoir
Born in Boyle Heights, I spent part of my childhood living in Mexico before returning to the same vibrant community I first called home. Constant moves, financial struggles, and shifting circumstances led to chronic absenteeism throughout my early school years. Living through those unstable years—and seeing how easy it was to fall through the cracks—taught me firsthand what it takes to overcome educational barriers and inspired my lifelong commitment to advocacy.
My mother taught me that education was our true way forward, no matter which side of the border we were on. Without formal credentials, her unwavering faith and our regular trips to the public library fueled my passion for learning during times of financial struggle and deep uncertainty. Her conviction anchored me, while my father provided an enduring model of resilience. As an immigrant who first came to the United States from Mexico under the Bracero Program, he poured his life into relentless hard work to secure a better future for us.
Driven by their courage and sacrifice, I began volunteering and taking on leadership roles in my school community as a teenager. Through that dedication and years of service, I earned scholarships to became the first and only child of three in my immediate family to graduate high school. Opening that initial door ignited a lifelong pursuit of knowledge, activism and service carrying me through a master’s degree and ultimately a doctorate in education. Through every step of that journey, I held fast to the powerful truth taught to me by Sr. Magdalene Coughlin: "An education is the only thing you can give yourself that nobody in the whole wide world can take away."
Years later, I returned to the very classrooms I once sat in—this time as an advocate, mentor, teacher, scholar and educational leader. I came back to redefine how we measure success, bridge systemic divides, and ensure that no child’s potential goes unseen.
Con un sueño en la mochila is more than my story—it is a testament to every immigrant and bicultural family silently advocating for their children. It speaks to the power of visibility, the strength of self-belief, and the profound impact of a single advocate. This is my story, my tribute to my roots, and a promise to every child carrying their dreams in their backpack.
